FOR THE LOVE OF RAISIN CAKES

“And the LORD said to me, ‘Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins. ‘” Hosea 3:1 (ESV) “
In response to a devotional I read I posted this in their comments.I’m almost disappointed to read how the raisin cakes referred to a pagan ritual. I will have to do further research on this. BUT can I just inject that my jaw dropped when I read it and I took it very personal.
I have been plagued with diabetes for years and managing my blood glucose levels (BGL) levels is a full-time job. I live in a realm of what I can and cannot eat throughout each day! In numerous Bible studies my on-going prayer requests have been my blood sugar management dilemma! When I mention my desire for carrot cake (an absolute favorite) people would strive to ease my pain to express that eating cake is not a sin. The conclusion I have come to is that if something I eat will raise blood sugar significantly, possibly causing harm to my body it is a sin to me. As stated in James 4:17 “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
So, reading Hosea 3:1 I took it very personal that God was reminding me that all levels of sin ranging from turning to other gods to loving raisin cakes is still sin and He loves us immensely and forgives us our sins. God was saying directly to me, “Denise, I saw you eating that carrot cake yesterday WHILE writing out Romans 12:1-2 (see below) but I still love you and forgive your poor choices. What an amazing, gracious, merciful, forgiving, loving God we have! Thank you, Father!
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:1-2
